VENUE: Employment Academy, 29 Peckham Road, SE5 8UA
Presenter: Sarah Brooks

This session aims to explore how systemic ideas can be practically applied in working with people in different contexts. We will look at warming the context and contracting with families using some ideas/ techniques that maybe be useful in practice including:

▪ working with the unexpected and
▪ sticking with/being creative in tricky moments.

Workshops #05

About the Presenter

'I am an Independent Social Worker and Systemic Family Therapist. I have found systemic ideas and framework enormously helpful in my work. I enjoy the challenge of working with families with diverse needs and from many different communities. I am trying to further my practice with play, and am learning that useful things can come out of sessions even when things seem to go awry! I have a small private family therapy practice; many of the families, parents and individuals I see are involved with public and private law court proceedings and are often referred via Solicitors and Local Authorities. I also spend one day a week attached to a Local Authority Post Adoption Support team.

I am also commissioned to prepare Independent Social Work reports for public and private law proceedings. I have a background in Local Authority Social Work – in various settings and roles- and was a self employed Guardian ad Litem, then Children’s Guardian for 16 year.' Sarah Brooks

Workshops #06

Reflecting Puppets Shows and Reflecting Role Plays: therapeutic ‘performances’ to capture the interest of children

This workshop will look at child-centred reflecting teams that aim to help engage young children (puppet shows) and older children / teenagers (role plays) more fully in Systemic practice.

'When glove puppets become co-therapists in the reflecting team, children usually become captivated and engaged. The shows can lead to an increased repertoire of child friendly comments and techniques and a greater inclusivity of children. Role Plays can be very useful in working in situations where there are ‘therapeutic impasses’ Peter Rober

Underpinned by the notion of ‘serious play’ from a narrative perspective, the workshop hopes to encourage participants to experiment with reflecting team practices so that a greater variety of methods may be utilised in working creatively with families.

The workshop will include a theoretical overview, to decide when and how to introduce puppets and role plays. Then we will consider the three ‘phases’ of the process (engagement, stretching conversations and feedback). Techniques will be illustrated using video clips and there will be an opportunity to practice and observe the process of these unusual reflecting teams.

About the Presenter

Pete Brown is a systemic family therapist working in a busy CAMHS team in South London. He is also a qualified systemic supervisor. Pete has written about Puppet Shows and Role Plays in Context Magazine and The Psychotherapist. A few years ago he was part of a family therapy team that was filmed for broadcast on BBC television. Since then the documentary has been re-edited into a training DVD for use on Systemic training courses and includes excerpts of puppet shows and role plays.

Reviews

'I thought it was an exceptional workshop, everyone was transformed , by the role play, learning in action! and how to use the puppets, especially the idea of waking them up, the clinical vignettes , especially with the 5 year old, the puppets conveyened ideas , emotions that talking does'nt sometimes capture. I would like this type of workshop to be periodic , so that we can feedback how we have used them in our work and other contexts. Noah, Final year Family Therapy Trainee

'Pete Brown's Saturday morning workshop at Chiron was such a captivating learning experience. Pete made therapeutically engaging and communicating with children using puppets accessible and fun for all. I left feeling enthusiastic about incorporating puppets and reflective role plays into my own practice and more confident about the use of improvisation in the therapy room. I would really recommend Family Therapy trainees and qualified professionals to attend one of Pete's workshops regardless of their experience of working with children. You will have a fun morning learning and will most definitely leave with new ideas.'
Jason, Specialist Clinical Social Worker and final year Family Therapy trainee

'This is a must attend workshop if you want to properly and creatively include children and young people in your practice of systemic psychotherapy.' Deni, Systemic/Family Psychotherapist

'There is no part of the counselling profession where Pete Brown and his puppets cannot expand or enhance therapeutic practice and knowledge. This workshop is a must!!' Alexandra, Trainee Children’s Counsellor
